Governor Wants Death Penalty in Cases of Mass Killings and Police Slayings

The Governor of Illinois is tired of mass shootings and police slayings. So much so that he has proposed bringing back the death penalty for individuals found guilty of these crimes.

Gov. Bruce Rauner said the death penalty should return in Illinois for "mass murderers and those who kill law enforcement officers."

Under the proposal, death penalty murder suspects would have to be found guilty "beyond all doubt," a higher threshold than "beyond a reasonable doubt."

Seven years ago, Illinois had done away with the death penalty over what was a perceived racial bias towards those who received that sentence.

Does making the death penalty only a viable option for only those who commit mass shootings or kill police officers send the message that some lives are more valuable than others?
