It's a bit tough to accurately evaluate the attractiveness of the Minnesota Vikings coaching vacancy from inside "Purple Nation" without bias. Either you're viewing the situation through purple colored glasses and the hope of the state's first Super Bowl victory - OR - you're a Minnesota fatalist and have been so badly scorned over recent years that your hope has been completely depleted.
This is why it's always interesting when you see outside sources take a gander at comparing the positions, much the way that Sports Illustrated and Conor Orr did today!
Orr created six different categories for which he graded each of the franchises on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best. The categories, created to mirror some of the factors that head coaching candidates would be likely to consider included quarterback situation, roster strength, ownership, quality of living, cap situation and fan base.
The Las Vegas Raiders job claimed the top spot with an average score of 7.6, but right behind them the Minnesota Vikings came in as the second most desirable landing spot for a potential coach with an average score of 7.
Here's what Orr's analysis had to say about the Vikings job...
If I’m a coach, this is probably the job I’m angling for, assuming all goes well with the general manager hire. While your cap is tricky, you have a veteran quarterback who can win you games right away. The No. 6 or No. 7 seed was never out of the question during the Mike Zimmer era and wouldn’t be now, assuming the new coach can make some defensive Band-Aid maneuvers and find a few prime-aged defensive stopgaps. Minnesota is a lovely state full of wonderful people, the ownership there has shown patience with prior head coaches compared to other owners and you inherit one of the best wide receiver tandems in the sport. There is nothing wrong with winning fast.
