Tour Bus Crash Leaves Three Dead, Dozens Injured In New Mexico

Three people were killed and 24 were hospitalized following a multi-vehicle accident that occurred just after 2 a.m. Sunday morning on Interstate 25 in New Mexico. Police said that the major pile-up started when a car collided with a pick-up truck from behind, ejecting the driver. A tour bus was forced to swerve out of the way of the disabled vehicle but flipped over on its side as it tried to avoid hitting the car. The bus was then struck by a semi truck.

Rio Rancho Fire Rescue responded and had to use the Jaws of Life to extract injured passengers from the bus. Authorities said that 12 people were taken to University of New Mexico Hospital, with three of the patients listed in critical condition. Eight others were taken to different nearby hospitals and at least two people were airlifted from the scene of the accident.

Officials said that there were 35 people on the bus, which was traveling from Denver, Colorado to El Paso, Texas. The owner of the bus company said they are cooperating with authorities as they investigate the crash.

The major accident shut down the stretch of highway in both directions for 11 hours as rescue workers tended to the injured and cleaned up the scene.
