It’s a big day for the tech world as the Apple “Special Event” took place out west this morning. But as techies were sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for the first glimpse at the iPhone 7 or a new Apple Watch, Apple pulled out a surprise announcement inviting one of the faces of Nintendo gaming, Shigeru Miyamoto out onto the stage.

What happened next, was literally historic.

Aided with a translator by his side, Miyamoto announced and demonstrated an IOS only game that will bring Super Mario to the App Store before the 2016 holiday season.

The game, titled “Super Mario Run” is a left to right side scroll, time based game that brings together the universe of Super Mario with one handed, head to head play where users can compete against friends or strangers and battle for high scores.

More importantly, this is Nintendo’s first ever venture off of their own platform systems which means that this could mark a new direction for Nintendo that could open up the ability to play some of video game’s most iconic titles like Mario, Zelda and other Nintendo titles on your iPhone, XBox One or PS4.

The price point was not disclosed but was referenced so this will not be a free (ad based) app.
